PSE Program

Preschool Vision Screenings and Eye Safety Education

The purpose of the program is twofold:

  • To provide screenings designed to detect potential vision problems in preschool children, and facilitate access to professional treatment after the screening to help them obtain care; and
  • To provide educational programs that stress the need for early detection, eye safety, and information about eye health and specific diseases or increase awareness about vision loss.

Our member agencies provide Vision Screenings to preschool children, up to 6 years of age, at day care centers & preschools, at kindergarten registration events, and at community events. Because sometimes children are older when entering school, there is no age restriction for children screened as part of kindergarten registration.

Education programs may be provided to school-aged children of any age. All of our member agencies have educational programming for pre-school and elementary students. The availability of programs for middle or high school students is dependent upon the local agency’s resources.

Most of our agencies use the Spot Vision Screener, which does not touch the child and provides an accurate reading of potential problems. It does not measure acuity.
